How To Remove The Speed Limiter On An Electric Bike?

Electric bicycles are usually classified as Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. One of the main differences between these classes is the top assisted speed limit. Class 1 and 2 electric bicycles have a speed limit of 20 miles per hour, while Class 3 electric bicycles have a speed limit of 28 miles per hour.

The top assisted speed refers to the maximum speed the bicycle can achieve with electric power from the motor. In simple terms, when the bicycle reaches 20 or 28 mph, the motor ceases to provide assistance. This does not mean that the bike itself will stop or reduce speed. You can go beyond the speed limit but the motor will not assist you anymore.

Why is there a speed limit on my e-bike?

Electric bicycles are subject to federal rules and regulations, just like any other operated vehicle. In the US, the implementation of e-bike laws vary, although most states follow the three-tier classification system. By setting a speed limit on e-bikes, the risk of accidents can be lowered and safety of the riders can be ensured.

Is it possible to remove the speed limit?

It is possible to remove the speed limit of your electric bike. However, there are implications in removing it.

Derestricting is the term for removing the e-bike’s speed limit or altering the e-bike’s way of reading the speed limit. A derestricted ebike would be able to go faster because the electric motor will not disengage when it hits the speed limit. The pedal assist will continue to function even after exceeding the speed limit.

This video from Electric Mountain Bike Network compares a derestricted electric bike to a restricted electric bike.

How to remove the speed limiter?

The procedure of removing the speed limiter varies depending on the electric bicycle model. Here are the two most common and easiest methods to remove the speed limiter:

Tricking the sensor method

The first method is pretty simple to understand and perform. The concept is to displace the sensor and replace its respective magnet to trick it into reading miscalculated speeds. To do this, you will need a magnet and duct tape, or a screw and a tiny driller.

The sensor can be located on the interior side of the base form of the e-bike. The magnet, which the sensor reads to determine the speed, is attached to the rear wheel.

The first step is to detach the sensor and transfer it to the other side, parallel to the back of the pedal. You can either use duct tape to secure it or you can use the driller to make a tiny hole and screw it. The next step is to attach a new magnet in the left crank, specifically at the back of the pedal. Make sure that the magnet is secured.

By displacing the sensor and attaching a nearer magnet, the system will detect less revolutions and calculate less speed, allowing you to go beyond the speed limit. After doing this, conduct a test ride to see if the sensor is miscalculating. A comprehensive step-by-step video tutorial may help you.

The sensor placement may vary significantly on the electric bicycle brand. The process is the same nonetheless. If your sensor is located on the main frame, you can check this video out.

The implication of this method is that you will not be able to see your accurate speed because the sensor will display a miscalculated one. The remedy for this is to buy a speedometer or a cycling performance tracker so that you will know the right speed.

Removing the speed limiter on common China ebikes

Most Chinese electric bikes can be derestricted by simply disconnecting a certain wire. To do this, open the controller by unlocking the screws. The next step is to find the white wire and disconnect it. Have a test ride outdoors and see if it works. A video tutorial may help you.

Implications of a derestricted e-bike

It is pretty obvious that a derestricted electric bicycle could go faster than an unrestricted one. There are important reminders that come along with derestricting. The first is that you have to be more responsible. Riding a derestricted ebike means riding faster than what is recommended for safety. To avoid accidents, wear proper protective equipment and be mindful when taking a ride.

Derestricting also voids the warranty of your e-bike. Be careful when trying out methods in derestricting, especially if you are a beginner. You would never want your electric bicycle to be dysfunctional because it compromises your safety. You also have to make sure to follow the correct procedures because derestricting failures could lead to hefty repair bills.

You are also breaking the law when you go faster than the regulated speed limit. Speed limits are set for a purpose. You may face certain traffic violations when you go beyond them. To avoid legal troubles, follow the law at all times.

Be careful, be mindful, and have fun.
